Govt to upgrade Essipong, Cape Coast stadiums to meet CAF, FIFA Standards – Yaw Ampofo Ankrah

The newly appointed Director General of the National Sports Authority (NSA), Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, says the government is committed to upgrading the Cape Coast and Essipong Sports Stadiums to meet Confederation of African Football (CAF) and FIFA requirements for hosting international competitions.

Speaking in an interview with Gideon Okyere Anim (Gattuso) on Accra-based Original TV, the NSA boss admitted that both stadiums face major infrastructure issues that must be addressed urgently.

“We have a lot of work to do. Cape Coast stadium is not in the best shape—the grass is very bad but we are working hard to fix it,” he said.

Ampofo Ankrah noted that while some progress has been made at the Essipong Sports Stadium, especially with roofing works, significant challenges remain.

“We can upgrade the Essipong stadium, but we need to invest a lot of money in it. I went there last month—the roof of the stadium is almost done and it looks good, but there is no electricity there. Also, there’s encroachment of lands close to the stadium.”

His remarks come at a time when concerns have been raised about the readiness of Ghana’s sports infrastructure to host high-profile international events. Both the Cape Coast and Essipong facilities have hosted major matches in the past but have since fallen into various stages of disrepair.

Ampofo Ankrah emphasized the government’s committment  to reverse the decline and restore the stadiums to international standards, though he admitted the process would require both time and significant financial commitment.
