MUSIGA To Introduce Minimum Wage for Musicians to Ensure Fair Compensation - Bessa Simons

President of the Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA), Bessa Simons, has announced the union's plans to introduce a minimum wage for musicians across the country.

This initiative, which is yet to be officially implemented, aims to ensure that musicians are fairly compensated for their performances at events, including those who perform in churches.

Speaking in an interview with Nana Kwame, host of Entertainment Brunch on Westgold Radio 106.3 FM in Takoradi monitored by Impactfulblogger.com, Mr Simons explained, "This move is part of MUSIGA’s broader vision to support musicians, particularly those who may not have the power to negotiate fair rates for their services."

Many musicians, especially those who are just starting out, often struggle with underpayment, leaving them vulnerable in the industry. By introducing a minimum wage, MUSIGA hopes to provide a safety net that guarantees fair compensation, regardless of the musician's experience or the type of event they perform at.

The upcoming policy will extend to all performance platforms, including religious settings, such as churches, ensuring that musicians are respected and paid accordingly for their contributions.

Mr. Simons emphasized that the union’s goal is to empower musicians by giving them the ability to earn a dignified living through their craft. MUSIGA plans to collaborate with industry stakeholders, event organizers, and religious institutions to ensure the smooth introduction and enforcement of this minimum wage policy.

Once in place, this initiative is expected to significantly improve the financial well-being of musicians in Ghana.
